Conducting Skills 1


This module introduces the basics of conducting technique. It is designed to help you if you’ve never conducted an ensemble before and you’d like to learn some basic skills in conducting technique.

Module Description

Conducting Skills 1 focuses on the physical technique of the conductor and will start from the beginning, assuming no previous experience.

This module will cover:

  • Body language
  • Posture and stance
  • Bringing an ensemble in together
  • Using a baton
  • Keeping a steady beat
  • Conducting in two
  • Conducting in three
  • Conducting in four
  • Conducting expressively
  • Working with your score

You will be asked to physically participate in practical conducting activities throughout this module and given opportunities to reflect on your own practice.

 This module will take about two to three hours to complete.


What you will need:

  • Speakers or headphones
  • Webcam, video camera or phone camera
  • Mirror
  • Internet access
  • A music notation programme such as Sibelius (requires licence) or Noteflight (free), or manuscript paper.
